first_img University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball player Gabriel Nakonechny and golf standout Kelsey Fuchs have been named the Varsity Blues male and female athletes of the week for the period ending September 30.Fourth-year veteran Gabriel Nakonechny hit for the cycle in leading the OUA defending champion Varsity Blues baseball team to a dominant 17-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday.The Toronto native went 5-for-5, including four extra base hits; a double, two triples and a grand slam home run. Gabriel also notched seven RBI and one stolen base in the win.Over four games this weekend, the international relations major batted .600 (9-for-15), drove in nine runs, scored eight times and recorded four stolen bases.The Blues (10-4) sit in second place in the OUA standings, just behind the Brock Badgers (9-3) who they will square off against this coming Friday, October 5.Kelsey Fuchs, a fourth-year biology major from Uxbridge, Ont., won the individual title at the 2018 McMaster Invitational on Thursday, September 27.Fuchs shot a round of 74 to win the individual gold medal, while also leading the six-time reigning OUA champion Varsity Blues women’s golf team to a first-place finish as well.Fuchs also led the Blues at the Waterloo Invitational, September 29-30, shooting an 82-79, good for a sixth-place individual finish.For more information, scores and highlights on your favourite U of T athletes and teams, please visit www.varsityblues.ca.
